It's not a blog! (It's a blog)

There is something very funny to me about starting a blog in 2026, when it has been decreed that no one reads and all human
communication must take place via short verticals. Yet the ascendancy of Substack does indicate that there is still a
blog-shaped hole out there in the internet.
I ran a blog a very long time ago, 2009-2011, during the first publishing era when everyone had to have one, so we could
do our own marketing. I was then so obsessed with writing prose I wasn't really interested in anything else, and I
found it difficult. I overwrote things, wrote like a novelist instead of a journalist or, God help me, a columnist. I
will try to write a little more carelessly here, which I will probably need to do anyway
to prove I am not AI (you can pry my em-dashes from my cold, dead hands).
The subjects will be a mix of books, technology, and weird bits of immersive things. Politics will sneak in at
the margins, because the idea that you can 'keep politics out' is a privileged delusion. I won't actively
try to include it.
I pledge to be reliably behind the discourse™, exactly where I belong.
